Boulder opals, so named because they are formed in the veins and cracks in ironstone boulders, produce unique jewellery pieces thanks to the way the stunning spectrum of colours contrasts with the natural brown backing of the host rock.
They are also considered the ideal stone for jewellery, including pendants, rings, earrings, bracelets and bangles as they are very durable, and less prone to cracks than some other varieties of opal.
Mined predominantly in outback Queensland, there are different varieties of boulder opal, each with its own distinctive patterns and veins. This variety is what makes boulder opals so valued both in jewellery and as loose stones.
