One of Australia’s Rarest Natural Treasures
Timeless Appeal of Opals
Australia is famous for producing the world’s finest opals, but few people have heard of one of its most fascinating geological wonders — White Cliffs Opalised Wood.
These remarkable specimens combine two extraordinary natural processes: the fossilisation of ancient trees and the formation of precious opal.
The result is a unique piece of Australian history that is millions of years in the making.

Ancient Trees Turned to Stone
Around 100 million years ago, much of inland Australia was covered by forests growing near an ancient inland sea.
Over time, fallen trees became buried beneath layers of sediment. As the wood slowly decomposed, silica-rich groundwater gradually replaced the original organic material, preserving the tree as fossilised wood.
In rare cases, precious opal also formed within the natural cracks, growth rings and cavities of the fossil.
This process created spectacular opalised wood unlike anything else in the world.
Why White Cliffs is Special
Located in New South Wales, White Cliffs is one of Australia’s oldest opal mining fields.
Unlike Lightning Ridge, which is famous for black opal, White Cliffs is renowned for producing:
- Opalised fossils
- Opalised shells
- Opalised marine creatures
- Opalised wood
These specimens are highly sought after by collectors because each piece tells a story that dates back over 100 million years.
Opal Within the Growth Rings
One of the most fascinating features of White Cliffs opalised wood is seeing flashes of precious opal following the original growth rings of the ancient tree.
These colourful veins often display brilliant blues, greens and violets, naturally tracing the life of a tree that existed long before humans walked the Earth.
Every specimen is completely unique.
No two pieces are ever the same.
A Collector’s Treasure
Because opalised wood forms under extremely rare geological conditions, museum-quality specimens are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain.
Collectors value them not only for their beauty but also for their geological significance.
Each specimen is both a natural gemstone and a fossil preserved for millions of years.
